Issue 2 – “fixed forms (loosely)” – Submissions Open July 1st

Writing comes in all shapes and sizes. Over the course of history, readers and writers have come up with terms to describe specific forms: haiku, limerick, villanelle, etc. Each form has its own expectations and rules.

Well? Rules were made to be broken.

In this issue, we’re looking for pieces that nod at their respective forms, and play with, expand, or out right break the rules they’re supposed to follow. The piece selected as “Best in Issue” will be awarded a $50 Visa gift card.

Issue 03: “Smoke and Mirrors”

Smoke and Mirrors will gather work that lingers in the uneasy space between truth and illusion—the half-told stories, the careful omissions, the outright lies we tell others and ourselves. This issue invites writing that explores deception in all its forms: betrayal by someone trusted, the quiet erosion of honesty in a relationship, the seductive pull of self-deception, or the moment when the illusion finally fractures. We’re interested in the tension between what is said and what is meant, what is shown and what is hidden—the ways we construct narratives to survive, to protect, or to control. Whether intimate or expansive, subtle or explosive, these pieces should reckon with the cost of dishonesty and the fragile, shifting boundary between reality and performance.
